About the final project for: Narrative Techniques for Illustrated Stories

Narrative techniques for illustrated stories

“We have reached the end of our course where we saw the fundamental elements of which a story is composed, then the possibilities of modifying a story from the alteration of time and also how the book itself can be a great ally to the time to narrate. Then we focus on the different components of the image and how each of these together can make the illustrated images very powerful pieces of communication and evocation of emotions in a story. In subsequent lessons I explained some basic sketching tools and then with a classic story you accompanied me to modify it from different explained resources. We alter the story from the plot, from the characters, from the non-linearity with cuts and repetitions and from the materiality of the object. We also experience other versions of the story through color, planes, persistent elements and some functional resources such as the image giving the explanation or reasoning of a statement made by the text. Finally you accompanied me to develop my final project: a version of Little Red Riding Hood counted in 8 pages and altered by the following resources: die, sequentiality, non-linearity of time. Remember that for your final project you must set aside some time to think, sometimes the ideas do not come out as quickly as one would like, but this is how all creative processes are, you have to think about the solutions. But don't give up that easy, something interesting always comes out. Take rest times and don't push yourself. Also note that this model is not a final piece, it is just an exploration, not only narrative but technical, so that you develop more skill when working with colored sketches. I am sure that your final proposal will excite you, the other members of this course and me, as they will all be very diverse, varied and novel. Little by little I will be seeing the results and commenting on the proposals, and although I will not always be able to reply to you immediately, be assured that I am awaiting your progress here. I hope that all these image and visual storytelling resources can contribute to your development as an illustrator and author of your own illustrated stories. Remember to always look for references that inspire you and open up new ways of thinking. I hope that through the exercises you have seen you can develop not only a charming final project but many of them in your professional life. See you soon! ”

“FINAL PROJECT I hope that with what I showed you in this course you can see stories differently and explore all the options that an image has when telling a story. Now we'll do a summary of the whole course so that you can prepare your final project. First I explained the eight elements that make up a story. Then we looked at resources to alter the linearity of the narrative structure and also to understand the options that a book gives you as an ally to the tale. Then we went through the most particular components of an image from its visual configuration to its relationship with the text....”
