20 prompts for writing or drawing horror stories

A selection of unsettling ideas for creating horror stories, illustrations, comics, or scenes based on mysterious characters, places, objects, and situations. A good horror story doesn’t always start with an obvious monster. Sometimes it starts with a doubt, an object out of place, a house that’s too quiet, a shadow that doesn’t quite fit, or a phrase no one should have heard. In this article, you’ll find 20 prompts for writing or drawing horror stories, designed to spark narrative and visual ideas. These aren’t complete plots, but rather starting points that you can develop into psychological horror, gothic horror, mystery, dark fantasy, or strange tales—whether in text, illustration, or comics. What Makes a Horror Idea Work The most effective horror ideas usually stem from the familiar turned strange: an everyday place with unsettling rules or a seemingly normal object with a dark history. Secrets that are revealed little by little, threats that aren’t fully shown, and presences that are sensed before they’re seen also work well. Silences, repetitions, and out-of-place details build tension, and characters who doubt what they’ve seen make the reader doubt along with them. An open-ended or ambiguous ending often leaves a deeper impression than a complete explanation. Horror doesn’t depend solely on scares, but on the creation of atmosphere.
