What Is Color Theory?

Learn the basic rules for creating colors so you can create color palettes more easily

Color theory is a set of rules that apply to color, regardless of how color is applied. It helps us to understand how different colors are created, and how they complement one another.

What Is Color Theory? 1

The color wheel

In generic terms, one could say that the color wheel is where colors ‘live’ and interact with one another in a way that helps us understand them—the color wheel orders color in a sequence of gradation.

The position of colors within the color wheel is invariable. Knowing where a color is located helps us when we need to mix a color or put together color palettes effectively and purposefully for our visual projects.
