What Is Needle Painting?
Discover how to achieve realism using a needle and thread
Needle painting or thread painting is an embroidery technique that uses traditional painting and drawing techniques to shade and add volume and structure to an image. The needle becomes your paintbrush and the thread, your paint.
In recent years, needle painting has become a very popular technique thanks to the extraordinary effects you can create with every stitch.
What materials do I need?
For needle painting, you can use the same materials that you would usually use for traditional embroidery. If you’re a more advanced or experimental embroiderer, you can use alternative materials, combining different kinds of bases or threads to create a range of effects.
Essential Materials:
–Fabric. It’s best to start off with a lighter color fabric so that it’s easier to transfer your design. It should also be a durable fabric, given that you will need to apply lots of stitches in order to achieve the desired effects.
–Thread. Having lots of different colors and tones will help you to shade and create gradients of color. If you’re going to embroider a leaf, for example, you will want to have at least three shades of green. You can start out using a typical DMC Mouliné embroidery thread, but generally, you should use a single strand thread (the Mouliné has six strands).
–Needles. The thickness will depend on the thread and fabric you choose. Usually, an ordinary embroidery needle is suitable.
–Embroidery hoop. There are different hoops and structures to hold your fabric in place while you embroider.
–Scissors.
–Materials for transferring the design. There are lots of methods, here’s one example:
First stitches
In needle painting, a combination of long and short stitches is most frequently used. Depending on your style, you can incorporate other basic stitches to create the outline and decoration.
The secret is to work out the direction in which you should stitch. A way to learn this is by sketching the design in different shades and colors.
