Pop-ups and beyond: discovering the dimensions of art on paper

At first glance, paper seems like a simple material, but if we look beyond the surface, its possibilities are almost limitless. Paper is not only a canvas: it is a material, a motor, an inspiration and a dimension. In this fascinating realm of paper art, every fold, cut and assembly tells a different story. It is a place where imagination comes alive, and paper becomes the tool to explore worlds of infinite opportunity.
Join me on this journey where we'll explore the various branches of paper art!

Papercraft
First stop: Papercraft! We could say that papercraft is the category that encompasses all the other specialities of paper art. Here, the word "paper" merges with "craft", inviting us to cut, glue, and fold paper in imaginative ways Papercraft is the perfect starting point for our journey, where manual dexterity meets unlimited creativity.
Collage
Immerse yourself in a universe of colours, textures and shapes that intertwine to tell unique visual stories. In collage, different visual elements are combined to create a unique composition. If it is true that collage can be made with all kinds of materials, it is common to make it with paper: photographs, photocopies, newspaper clippings and illustrations. It is a perfect technique if drawing is not your thing, as you start from an already created image to which you bring a new meaning: from surreal landscapes to portraits that capture emotions.

Origami
In the wonderful art of origami, sheets of paper are transformed into enchanted creatures and amazing shapes through the folds. The word "origami" comes from the kanji "ori" (to fold) and "kami" (paper). It is a speciality in which precision, patience and ingenuity play the leading role. Some origami principles have been applied in the field of space engineering, such as solar panels or deployable antennas that challenge the limits of creativity and functionality.
Kirigami
While origami is based on folding, kirigami allows the use of scissors or knives to create cuts in paper and often combines these cuts with folds to produce three-dimensional structures. It combines strategic cuts with precise folds to create structures that unfold and come to life. From greeting cards to moving sculptures, kirigami is the dance of paper that captivates the beholder.
Pop-up
Next station: pop-up. Here, paper becomes three-dimensional mechanisms that unfold, jump and transform a flat surface into a visual spectacle. From interactive books to birthday cards, pop-up adds a magical touch to every project. The beauty of pop-up lies in the fact that with a few simple folds you can create captivating storytelling experiences.

Papier Maché
We close our tour with papier-mâché, where paper, when mixed with adhesive, becomes a malleable material to create sculptures and decorative objects. The term "papier maché" comes from the French "papier mâché", which means "chewed paper" or "shredded paper". It is a versatile art that allows experimentation and the creation of unique pieces full of personality. It allows you to transform a flat surface like paper into an object with dimensionality.
And here we come to the end of our journey through the fascinating world of paper art. If these various forms of expression have inspired you, I have exciting news: My course "Making Pop-Up Cards for Beginners" is now available!
