Astrid Blohme

Hi, I’m Astrid, 56, and a mother of a 21 year-old son.

I live in Kiel / Germany close to the Baltic Sea. After a scientific career in the pharmaceutical industry I stepped out to be a free artist. This did not came out of a sudden. Since I was a child I was attracted by the beauty of nature and luckily I grew up on a farm, where I found the environment to express myself. Besides just being outside in the meadows I loved it to dress me up with all the nice clothes of my mother and grandmother. Painting was another passion in my childhood and it is still continuing. People, particularly the relationship between people became my favorite subject in painting. Often I start with a photo torn out of a magazine, found in the family photo album, or a photo I took of persons surrounding me.

Some years ago I discovered that I somehow try to see the soul of the people in my pictures and that taking photographs is also a key in this regard. I like experimental sessions with crazy accessories or in strange environments. The outer circumstances are limiting the chances for people photography and therefore self-portraits are a good idea in these days. I thought that I am not a selfie person, but why shouldn’t I break up this inner principle. Taking self-portraits might be a mirror or tool to recognize myself and to investigate how inner changes are reflected in these pictures. I am curious…
