How To Draw A Bird

In this step-by-step tutorial we will focus, for once, on the simple beauty of the sparrow, since this charming member of the "Passeridae" family, is so common, that it is often overlooked.

Follow a few guidelines, and learn how to bring a sparrow back to life...! Although maybe that's going too far... You don't need to know alchemy to follow this tutorial!

Cicle and Oval

Let's begin with a circle. That's simple enough! This will represent the shape of the head for the time being. Below it, bigger in size and a tad to the right, let's place an oval, to establish the basic body shape... Is it breathing yet...?

Shaping and Placing the Body and Feet

Next we will shape the wing and tail as shown in the image below. Also draw a line for the base of the feet. So that it doesn't fall... (Is this too tacky, should I turn it down a notch...? Probably.)!

For the feet begin by sketching a series of circles which we will interconnect, later. These circles serve as guides to maintain the rounded shape of the claws. Finally, add the talons for a realistic touch... I mean, only if your don't want your bird to limp everywhere it goes!

Basic Outline

Let's now define the bird's body, following the guidelines established by the first two shapes, and also give the bird a subtle chin. And don't forget about the beak and eye, next...! Although, how could one "forget" anyways? Cheap expressions galore...!

Feathers and Charm

Next, Let's start to depict the intricate details of the feathers. Sketch the first row, with the longer ones extending downward, layered gracefully on top of each other. The remaining feathers should be "suggested" with delicate lines, adding depth and texture to your bird's plumage.

The final details are just to give the bird a bit of charm. Scketch a few lines around the eyes and belly to give the impression of fluff. As a final touch darken the eye and give it a bit of shape.

Is it breathing yet...? I already did that one, I know...!

Coloring

If you want to add color the steps are quite simple: a first layer of color, then a gentle shading with white on the belly and neck, and lastly with a darker color shade the head, and the wing and tail, but make sure to begin the shading from the top of the feathers.

Apply a similar approach when coloring the beak, and don't forget to add the final touches with highlights. Never forget the highlights...! Sorry for the ominous tone there, I got carried away!
