Just started this course but great so far, really straight forward and very concise explanations.

Loved this course, already working as an artist mainly in pastels and wanted to refresh with charcoal as I haven’t used it for a while. Picked up a few tips, love the gridded printed photo ref ( why didn’t I think of that). Also great ref site recommended. Overall a really good course for seasoned artists and beginners.

Buy this course! It’s brilliant. I wouldn’t care what subject matter Sarah got me to draw on this course - as long as Sarah was the teacher. I teach myself and she is the best! Even having had lessons elsewhere in charcoal I just absorbed the information better with Sarah teaching. She explains things so well, presentation is clear, the information is great. The exercises were invaluable I now feel I actually understand what charcoal can do, and how certain materials differ from one another.

Perhaps my fault for expecting something different. Using the grid method and somewhat mechanically drawing seemed contrary to the "expressive" portrait goal of the course. I was thinking of a more alla prima approach. I think the video could certainly be better - often focused so far away that you can't see what she is drawing. There are also long stretches of silence while the instructor works on her drawing.

Sarah is a fantastic teach, very clear and very inspirational. I have been drawing fo many years but this course really does take you to the next level. Sarah covers the basics but then goes on to demonstrate how to turn a drawing into a real work of art. This is just what I needed. The course has filled me with excitement about what is possible.
