Yeo Mei Ying

My name is Yeo Mei Ying, and I am a Malaysian artist and the founder of Evangelione, a studio practice devoted to the creation of handcrafted narrative dolls. Since 2005, I have worked at the intersection of craft, character, and quiet storytelling—using the doll not only as a medium, but as a form to be questioned, redefined, and expanded. My work explores the emotional and conceptual possibilities of the doll: as sculpture, as vessel, as symbol, and as a deeply personal mode of expression. Each figure is constructed entirely by hand, with precision and intention, inviting reflection and attention to the smallest detail.

Over the past two decades, my dolls have been exhibited in a range of solo and collaborative shows. My first solo exhibition, The Feast, was held in Kuala Lumpur in 2012 and was followed by The Feast 2.0 at Tsutaya Books in Bukit Jalil in 2022. In 2013, I collaborated with Hong Kong fashion brand b+ab for their Fall/Winter collection, culminating in an exhibition in Hong Kong. These experiences reflect an ongoing evolution—both technically and conceptually—in my practice. In this course, students will be guided through the full process of making a doll from the ground up—from initial construction to expressive finishing touches—with the aim of empowering them to create a unique, meaningful piece of their own.
