The holiday season is a perfect time to put your creative skills to work and decorate your home in a unique and personal way. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to create a small macramé Christmas tree, which you can use as a keychain or hang as a decoration in different parts of your home.
This hand-woven tree will add a touch of warmth and charm to your festive atmosphere.
It's a simple craft, but if you are just starting in the world of macramé and want to continue learning to improve your level, we recommend you to take one of our macramé courses.
If you already have some level and know the basic knots, follow these steps and create your own macramé Christmas tree!

Materials you will need:
- Cotton thread
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- 3 pearl head pins
- Comb
Step 1: Cut the Threads
The first step is to prepare your threads by cutting them into different lengths. You can use green threads, the typical color of a Christmas tree, or let your creativity shine by experimenting with different colors. The crucial aspect here is to cut your threads in the following lengths:
6 x 10 cm
6 x 12 cm
10 x 13 cm
1 x 45 cm
Step 2: Prepare Your Base Thread
Fold the 45 cm thread in half and secure it on a soft base. You can secure the top with a pin and place another pin at each of the two bottom ends. This will be your base thread.
Step 3: Start Weaving
Now, you're going to start working with the 10 cm threads. Take one of them, fold it in half, and place it perpendicular below the base thread, about two centimeters from the top of the base thread, with the open side (the one with two threads) to the left. Take a second 10 cm thread, fold it in half, and place it at the same height as the first one but above and with the open side facing the right.
To secure these two threads together, you'll need to insert the open part of one through the closed part of the other and pull the ends. This way, a knot will be created on the base thread.
Step 4: Repeat This Operation with the Remaining Threads
As we mentioned, this Christmas tree is straightforward to make. Once you've mastered the first step, you just need to repeat the operation with the remaining threads. However, it's essential to follow the order, from smaller to larger.
Step 5: Comb Your Tree
As you read, it's time to comb your tree. To untangle the cotton thread and loosen each of the threads, use a comb and comb through each of the threads you used to weave your tree.
Step 6: Give It Shape
As you'll see, after combing it, the shape is a bit uneven. You can trim the tips of the threads with scissors and give your tree the desired shape. The idea is for it to resemble the image at the beginning of this article.
Step 7: Decorate Your Tree
Once you have the weaving part finished, you can add some Christmas decorations to your tree, such as a star-shaped bead on the top. This is where you can showcase your creativity!
There you have it, you've created a beautiful macramé Christmas tree in just a few minutes. This project allows you to express your creativity and welcome the holiday season in a unique and artistic way. Enjoy your macramé Christmas tree!
