Master proportion, style, facial features and personality as you bring a Japanese-inspired character to life.

1. Drawing the Head
Define the shape of the head, paying attention to the head angle and the eyes. Natalia points out that when you do a caricature you often bring out the bad things in the person's face and make them more pronounced. In manga you prefer bringing out the good things and make them even more pretty or cool.

2. Drawing the eyes and eyebrows
The eyes are very important in manga, that is where you convey the most expression for the character and a lot of their personality. Anime eyes are often over-sized or very pronounced in manga drawings.

3. Drawing the nose and mouth
The nose doesn’t describe emotion or feeling of the character traditionally in manga, but it is important to include. When doing the mouth sometimes you can make it rounder or longer or smaller or bigger it all depends on what your reference is, or if you have some certain personality of the character that you want to bring out. If the character is very energetic and talkative, Natalia suggests maybe they should have a big mouth. So the mouth can play an important role in showing the characters’ personality.

4.Drawing the hair
Natalia advises that manga characters usually have ‘fluffy’ or ‘big’ hair styles. The hair is not too close to the hair so bare that in mind when drawing your characters’ hair.
The important thing with hair in anime drawing, Natalia points out, is that hair is not ‘straight lines’, it can be flowy so play around with shapes to create the right style for your character. Use the flow of the lines and don’t feel like you need to stick to the rules. Adding a few details into the clothing where the hair falls is enough. It doesn’t need to be too detailed.
