Design Process and Inspirations
My design process embodies a balance of analytical precision, creative exploration, and sustainability. Each project begins with an in-depth evaluation of the problem at hand, understanding client needs, and identifying opportunities for innovation. Drawing from my multidisciplinary background and extensive experience in mechanical draughting, I employ a methodical approach that integrates research, conceptualization, CAD modeling, prototyping, and production.
Inspirations:
First Encounters with CAD Design
My journey into mechanical design began with the Bearing Puller Project during my studies at the Academic Institute of Excellence. This project marked my initial exposure to CAD software, specifically Autodesk Inventor. It transformed my curiosity into a deep passion for mechanical systems, solidifying my decision to specialize in the mechanical elective. This experience taught me the power of translating ideas into functional designs and ignited my enthusiasm for problem-solving through precision engineering.
Sustainable and Innovative Solutions
Working at Thriftline Products Pty Ltd., my role in the AQ Reaming Shell Split Mould Design project further shaped my design philosophy. By focusing on reusability and efficiency, the project achieved a tenfold increase in mould cycles, reducing costs and environmental impact. This milestone reinforced my dedication to creating designs that marry functionality with sustainability.
Practical Problem-Solving
The 8’’-10’’ Conversion T-Nut Custom Design is an example of my ability to innovate under constraints. Faced with the absence of market-ready solutions, I designed a cost-effective adapter, showcasing my adaptability and commitment to practical solutions. This project exemplifies my ability to leverage technology and ingenuity to meet unique challenges.
Collaborative Design
Collaboration plays a critical role in my process. Whether working with machinists, welders, or quality controllers, teamwork is central to ensuring designs align with performance and manufacturing standards. My experience at Thriftline Products has honed my skills in managing cross-functional projects while maintaining rigorous quality control.
Integrated Systems Approach
The Conveyor Belt Project, part of a larger multidisciplinary mail-sorting facility design, highlighted my ability to integrate mechanical systems into broader contexts. This project expanded my problem-solving perspective and strengthened my proficiency in creating interconnected systems.
Through each project, I strive to not only meet technical requirements but also contribute meaningful, innovative solutions that align with evolving industry standards. My work reflects a commitment to merging creativity with technical precision, ensuring each design inspires and delivers excellence.

From Chance to Purpose: My Journey into Design and Inspiration
Sometimes, the best paths in life are the ones we stumble upon. My journey into draughting and design began unexpectedly when a friend dragged me to an open day at Benoni College. Skeptical but curious, I registered for the program. Little did I know, this spontaneous decision would become the foundation of my career and my passion.
After completing my N3/N4 in Electrical Infrastructure Design and Electronics in 2002, I encountered a harsh reality—finding an apprenticeship or internship was almost impossible. The frustration of being unable to break into the field I had studied for was disheartening. Yet, even in that season of uncertainty, I held onto the belief that hard work and perseverance would eventually open the right doors.
In 2019, nearly two decades later, an unexpected opportunity came my way. I secured a three-month temporary placement as a general worker at Thriftline Products, filling in for a co-worker on sick leave. My role was to assist with finishing tasks, but I treated it as more than a job—I saw it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and prove myself. My dedication and work ethic caught the attention of management, and what was supposed to be a short-term stint turned into a permanent position.
This turning point changed everything. The company’s CEO, impressed by my willingness to learn and the design drafts I had sketched during downtime, offered me an opportunity to study further. I seized this chance, enrolling in draughting and design programs while continuing to grow at Thriftline Products.
Through hard work and relentless curiosity, I contributed to impactful projects such as the Split Mould Design for Reaming Shells, which enhanced sustainability in manufacturing, and the Drilling Guide Project, a groundbreaking tool for field precision. These projects are not just milestones in my career—they are testaments to the power of perseverance and preparation.
The most significant lesson I’ve learned along the way is that chasing your dreams requires equipping yourself with the right skillset. Like the most celebrated athletes, performers, and designers, you have to put in the work every single day. Dreams alone won't carry you; the effort you invest will.
Looking ahead, my vision is to become a prominent African designer, creating innovative solutions that inspire others while reflecting our continent’s unique creativity. I also aspire to share my love for design with aspiring engineers and designers, showing them that with resilience, passion, and a commitment to growth, they too can achieve their dreams.
My story is proof that even in the face of setbacks, life can present you with unexpected opportunities. And when those opportunities come, all it takes is the courage to grab them and the determination to turn them into something extraordinary.
