Capturing the essence of a character with only water and color seems an impossible challenge, but the illustrator Carlos Rodríguez Casado proves otherwise, capturing his watercolor caricatures on the covers of important print media such as El Mundo, El Español, Líbero, and Cambio 16. and on international channels such as MTV with the hit series Teen Wolf.

What's included in this course?
Start by meeting Carlos Rodríguez Casado, who tells you about his professional career as an illustrator, the media for which he has worked, and the artists and illustrators he has as main references for the development of his style.
Together with Carlos, become familiar with the different types of paper, brushes, and watercolors to achieve clean results, with good color intensity and that last over time.
Next, look for visual references of a character relevant to you, specifically two images, one for the caricature on the inside and one for the cover. Carlos' is based on Patti Smith but you can choose the character you want.
Do the sketch of the interior illustration on a model. First, trace the format on the paper to find the shape that best fits the space. Then, make the first strokes of your caricature and once finished, Carlos explains how to give it color with a special level of detail in the eyes, eyebrows, chin, jaw, nose, and mouth.
When you have finished it, create the sketch of the cover. In this case, there is no defined format apart from the limits of the paper itself and, therefore, you can adjust the composition to your liking. In addition, learn different techniques to add final details to your character's hair and skin.
Finally, digitize your illustrations and make the final touches in Adobe Photoshop to prepare the image for printing.

Regarding the materials, you need watercolor pencils, watercolor paper, Arches and Hahnemülle, watercolor tubes, round watercolor brushes, a flat oil paint brush, a scanner or camera to digitize your illustration, and a computer with Adobe Photoshop.
