Designers and art therapists Olivia Silveira and Ana Luiza Nigri weave stories of social transformation through Projeto Fio, a brand that goes far beyond fashion itself, training a network of women from the communities of Rio de Janeiro to make a living off embroidery while also using it as a form of creative expression.
In this course, create a botanical pattern to embroider onto the garment of your choice. Olivia and Ana Luiza teach you techniques for drawing your pattern onto the fabric and the basic embroidery stitches to bring it to life. Learn to create the color palette, as well as how to care for your creation and share it with the world.

Next, discover how to easily sketch your pattern onto the fabric without leaving a mark. Learn the essential embroidery stitches, from the basics to some of the more elaborate ones. Then Ana Luiza shows you how to draw your botanical compositions by observing the flowers, leaves, and fruits of various plants.
Once you’re settled on a design, look at some techniques for adapting it to embroidery for a composition brimming with color and texture. Put together a color palette, choose the best stitches for your design, and decide how and where to position it on your piece of clothing to get the full effect.
To round out the course, Olivia and Ana Luiza give some final tips for washing and taking care of your garment. They also show you how to apply the techniques you've learned on other pieces like hats, cushion covers, and shoes, as well as some ways to share your work with the world.

Requirements and materials
No prior knowledge is necessary for this course.
In terms of materials, you need a number 6 and 8 sewing needle, cotton embroidery threads, some plain elastane-free fabric, scissors, carbon paper and/or a heat sensitive fabric marker, and your chosen garment.

To date, they have trained over 40 women who now contribute to Projeto Fio with their artisan pieces, using embroidery as a creative language to tell their stories as well as a source of income. Each of the brand's garments and accessories has been embroidered using natural and biodegradable materials.
