Fill Your Ceramics With Color With This Simple Marbling Technique

  • by Harry Davies @harry_davies

Paula Casella Biase, potter and founder of Bambucito, shows us how to marble our pieces quickly and easily

The creation and personalization of ceramic pieces goes beyond modeling, although this is an essential part. The shape of the piece is completed with the decoration that we want to apply, and the use of glazing techniques usually contributes to a much more attractive and unique finish.

One of the simplest glazing techniques is marbling, with which we can use a few colours and some heat to create more interesting work. To help you learn to apply marbling, ceramicist Paula Casella Biase (@paulacasellabiase) explains her technique in the video below:

What do I need to apply the marbling technique?

Ceramic marbling is one of the simplest and easiest techniques to apply.

All you need are:

- At least two ceramic glazes diluted in water, of the colours you like most, to combine them
- A piece of ceramic already dried, ideally a simple plate.
- A kiln to fire the piece once we have applied the glaze

You'll need a piece of ceramic and at least two ceramic glazes

What steps should I take?

- Pour the two paints on the ceramic piece and, lifting the plate, move it from one side to the other inclining it so that the enamel is distributed.
- When you like the pattern that has been formed, simply let the glaze dry on the piece.
- Finally, take the piece to be fired... and that's it!
