Sketching, drawing, painting: outside for a small quick skectch and then at home or art class to work out the subject on bigger formats with aquarel, oil or acrylics or drawing material like charcoal or conté pencils, crayons etc.
Newspaper or magazine pictures are also good starting points. It can lead to series in different materials.
