Morning Pages

This piece, Morning Pages, is a soft pastel still life inspired by the ritual of beginning the day without agenda. The cup of coffee, pen, and notebook are familiar objects, but here they’re treated as symbols of pause, attention, and gentle readiness rather than productivity.

I was interested in how everyday morning tools can become a quiet threshold. An invitation to show up as you are. The muted background and softened edges mirror the hazy, unguarded quality of early thought, while the warm red holds a sense of grounding and presence. This work reflects my relationship to morning pages as a practice of listening before deciding what comes next.

I began this piece by thinking about the quiet ritual of mornings. Before productivity, before decisions. I worked intuitively, letting familiar objects emerge rather than planning a composition.

Using soft pastels, I focused on gentle layering and imperfect marks, allowing the image to stay a little hazy, like early thoughts. The process mirrored the practice of morning pages itself: showing up, noticing, and letting things be unfinished.

My hope is that this piece encourages others to see everyday moments as creative thresholds and to trust that simply beginning is enough.
