Thanks for the course. For the final project I started with a photo range aimed at getting high contrast photos. I decided for a not typical composition. I wanted to combine pure black with some white spots but also a lot of softening grey.
Extra attention was given to the right eye and on the hair vanishing in the background. I want to make a second charcoal drawing from the range of photos. May be combining charcoal and water color. Any suggestions for the photo and the composition?

This is absolutely spot in. Wow, what an interesting composition. I love how you’ve cropped the final piece and the various layers and textures created using the various tools. Such a sense of looseness and spontaneity about this, even though I can see that it is very well considered and executed. For your second piece, perhaps try for a more somber mood and use the one in which the models’ eyes are shut. If you use Daler Rowney line and wash board, and fix the charcoal with fixative, you should be able to add watercolour and or ink. My students here in Arley are currently working on projects which involve adding loose watercolour shapes to the hairline (to replace the hair) and then overlaying them with fine liner shapes such as flowers/birds etc. I’m not sure if this would interest to you but hopefully give you food for thought.
@sarah_stokes Thank you for your nice feedback. I will let you know when I have made my second charcoal portrait combined with watercolour and share it with you.
