Baskerville:
The type of the 18th century
Baskerville was designed by John Baskerville (1706-1775).
It is considered to be a fine representation of eighteenth century rationalism and neoclassicism.
John Baskerville began working on engravings for tombstones using a style of writing that would later resemble the lettering of his eponymous typeface. The type was cut into metal by punchcutters and Baskerville was known as an innovator of technique and style with high standards for paper and ink quality. Notable uses of its design include a masterpiece folio Bible for Cambridge University, classic edition of Ulysses, and the 1965 back cover of In Cold Blood.
Baskerville is known as the first of the transitional romans, with its greater differentiation between thick and thin strokes, making serifs sharper and more tapered and shifted the axis of rounded letters to a more vertical position.
Its classified as a serif typeface.
The font has a certain flair and a handmade character and it's popular with book covers.
