Introduction
In 2022 I was commissioned to design and make a mosaic pavement for Reo Jewels in Margate. This was my biggest commission to date, and also my first floor/pavement mosaic. The process for making a floor mosaic of this scale is more involved than when making smaller wall-based mosaics, and it proved a real challenge. I worked out the process as I went along, with plenty of guidance from London School of Mosaic, where I was still studying at the time.
It took me around three months to fabricate, including working evening and weekends, so it provided a great test of my patience and confirmed that I had what it takes to be a professional mosaicist.
There were some issues with the installation, which I outsourced to a professional floor tiler who'd not installed mosaics before. This means there were some imperfections in the finished result, but luckily mosaics carry their imperfections well, and it just looks more vintage than it actually is. I've since learnt how to install floor mosaics myself to avoid that issue in future.
The finished mosaic gets a lot of love from passers-by in Margate, and it led to me being commissioned to design a mosaic pavement for the bar next-door the following year.

Supplies
Unglazed-ceramic tiles.
I created this mosaic using the indirect method on paper.
Reo Jewels & CAMP
A year after installing my Reo Jewels heart pavement, I was asked to create a mosaic floor for the bar CAMP next door. For the CAMP mosaic I made simpler pixel tiles to insert into a standard tiled pavement.
