I am an anthropologist who has worked and lived part time in the Cordillera Central of the Philippines and in Ottawa Canada. I began studying printmaking part-time through the general program at the Ottawa School of Art in 1993, and then pursued master classes with artists in Canada, Colombia, and the Philippines. Anthropologists straddle many worlds and positionalities and I am no exception. My background as the child of refugees growing up in Canada also means that I often experience myself as an outsider in every world. In my work, I attempt to document my encounters with myself and with other peoples, cultures and landscapes, both personally and professionally. I do not claim that I am ‘representing’ other cultures, peoples or landscapes, rather my images reflect my imperfect understanding as an outsider.
