My husband and I built a bolt hole in a small nature reserve about 2 hours north of Cape Town, before we built a huge fire burnt everything to the ground. This fynbos landscape is a fire-ecology and we are waiting to see what grows from deep seedbeds. Around the house we have to keep a clear perimeter for future fires and plant mostly fire-resistant vegetation and further back trees. the 2 factors we need to incorporate are lots of wind breaks as we are at the top of the mountain and suffer anabatic winds and we desperately need shade as it gets extremely hot, its a big space 3,5 hectares and only want to develop around the house and leave the rest to nature
