Different artists are working in collaboration with design-led mattress brand Simba Sleep to create a limited edition collection of designer mattresses. There will be 20 mattresses made per designer, with all profits from the 100 mattresses in total going to Crisis. On top of that, Simba will also be donating 5% of profits from all of its mattress sales during November and December.
Each purchase will help the charity deliver and contribute towards Crisis at Christmas, which each year, provides hot meals, shelter and companionship to more than 11,000 homeless guests over the festive period.
Kate and Jenue's ‘Dreams Come True’ mattress shows of their love of typography and colour, playfully alluding to all the good things that can happen in a bed.
The Simba Art Collective range will be available in a standard UK Double (£599) and King Size (£699) and will be available exclusively from https://simbasleep.com/pages/collective
Each mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial promise and a 10-year guarantee.
Process
I had the chance to work with Kate months ago on another project and when we met I felt that the connections between our styles could compliment each other quite well. Kate has a predominant palette of colours ranging from pinks to more vibrant colours, something that made me felt secure using my own pallet, which was equally as vibrant, although mine are focused more on secondary colours.
When Kate contacted me and sent to me the briefing for this Charity Poster, I immediately felt excited and curious about by the prospect of completing this project and the potential of the final image.
Briefing
Kate had in mind, from the beginning, to make an original and colourful type and that this time she wanted to collaborate with me to make it in 3D. This image was the first rough sketch that she showed to the client and me.
First test
This image below was the first test that I made, based on her design, to show Kate how the project could look.
Developing the sketch
After Kate liked the previous image, she then sent to me one more sketch to visualise some of the other letters. Kate then gave me freedom to continue with the project, developing other letters by myself and allowing me to be in charge of the art direction of the piece right until the end.
Sculpting and Modelling
In the image below you can see an example of how I carried out the sculpting and modelling of some of the letters. I drew inspiration to create a range of letters, each with their own individual design, ranging from arms for the letter C, to a smiley face for the letter M, which was inspired by Dustin, my favourite actor from the amazing series Stranger Things ;).
Applying the texture
In this step I had already modelled most of the letters and so I started texturing the letters and playing with the light until I achieved the correct level where I could see nice shadows.
The colours
In this step, we were very close to completing the design and so I wanted to play around with the colours. I showed to Kate a few variations of the design. Below are 2 examples which I have selected: the first my favourite and the second is Kate´s.
The background
Kate had in mind from the beginning to mix the project with 2D, in order to achieve a different and unique style mixing her own skills and mine. I thought this was a fantastic idea and using her amazing ability with photoshop brushes, she designed the background for the piece and then I put it together with everything.
Postpro
Here you can see a comparison of the render and how it looked after post production in Photoshop. Some adjustment was made to the colours.
The end
We enjoyed working together on this project and we felt that it was an a excellent result.
We hope you enjoyed it as well and thanks for your time.
