Stephen Iliffe

I'm deaf, a freelance photographer and writer. I'm passionate about images, text and stories. I graduated with a degree in photography in the 1980s, but since have worked mainly in the charity sector. Three years ago, I took a career break to return to my creative roots. My biggest achievement to date came two years ago when the above portrait of two deaf asylum seekers was selected for the Hoxton Mini Press / British Journal of Photography's ' Portrait of Britain 2018 book.
My current project is Deaf Mosaic - a series of intimate portraits that celebrates the UK's deaf community.
I'm doing Emilia Brandao's course to stretch myself and improve how I manage people and direct photo shoots.
