A raven surrounded by yew and brambles, inspired by the Hunger Birds from Neil Gaiman's Ocean at the End of the Lane.

As a primarily digital artist, I love going back to paper sometimes, just to prove to myself that I can still draw!

Known as Hunger Birds or Varmints in the book, these Carrions of the Void act as scavengers, devouring any creature that doesn't belong in this world. When consumed by the Hunger Birds, you not only cease to exist, but cease to have ever existed; no trace or memory of you will remain. Hunger Birds invoke universal terror - unless you're Old Mrs Hempstock. Then the Hunger Birds answer to you...

"You’re scavengers. Eaters of offal, of rubbish, of garbage. You’re cleaners... Shall I bind you in the heart of a dark star, to feel your pain in a place where every fragment of a moment lasts a thousand years?"

I chose ancient yew for it's toxicity and age, and brambles for their startling colour and aggressive appearance. The raven is a notorious yet powerful scavenger, unperturbed by the dangerous plants ensnaring it.

I loved every moment of this course and experience. This feels like the most 'me' piece of artwork I've ever made. I've been so inspired by both my love for Ocean at the End of the Lane and by Jessica's beautiful artwork and tuition. Thank you so much for this course.
