Solving common soap-making problems: discover practical solutions for perfect soaps

Creating beautiful cold process soaps can be a delightful endeavor, but sometimes even the most experienced soapmakers encounter unexpected difficulties. As a professional soapmaker and trainer of "Design and Creation of Cold Process Soaps" on Domestika, I'm here to guide you through some of the most common soap making problems and how to solve them.

If you're facing any of the following soapmaking problems, don't worry - there's a solution.

Issue 1: No Trace

Seeing the trace in your soap dough is an essential step in the soap-making process. If you can't see it, check your ingredients. Make sure you've weighed your sodium hydroxide (lye) correctly, and, if you've formulated your recipe precisely in the calculator, make sure it contains the right amount of lye.

Issue 2: Fast Trace

If the trace appears too quickly, it may be due to high temperatures or the presence of certain additives. This is not a severe problem, but it can complicate casting and design work. Certain oils and sweet additives, in particular can accelerate the thickening process, but this is manageable.

Issue 3: Separation of Ingredients

If you notice that the soda solution and oils, which should be homogenized, separate during the soap-making process, this is probably due to high temperatures. Be sure not to exceed 50°C to avoid this problem.

Issue 4: Brittle, Crumbly Soap

Crumbly, brittle soap can be the result of too little water, too much lye or too fine a trace. It's essential to weigh your ingredients precisely and mix them thoroughly to obtain a trace. Check the pH at the end of the cure, i.e. 4 weeks after soap manufacture, using a test strip to make sure it's safe; if it's caustic, discard it.

Issue 5: White Powder Deposits

A white powdery deposit on your soap, known as soda ash, is harmless and disappears with use. To avoid it, keep your soap in the mold for at least 48 hours, or cover it after pouring. You can also scrape it off if you find it aesthetically unsightly, or use a little 90-proof alcohol to clean it.
