Julie Liger-Belair

I am an artist living and practicing in Toronto, Canada. For 20 years I have been making collage and assemblage work using vintage photos, Japanese paper, found objects and ephemera as well as acrylic and gouache paint, colour pencils and ink. I make large pieces that combine painting and collage on wood cradle boards as well as small collage pieces on paper.

An important part of my creative practice is a daily sketchbook routine. It is through my sketchbook that I warm up my creative muscles and experiment with ideas. My daily sketchbook allows me to play around with new ideas and images without the pressure to have a pleasing outcome. This, in turn, allows for real freedom to try new things and also to tap into the unconscious creative impulse.
