The final project for this course - I absolutely loved it! I will be making many more, and cannot recommend this course enough.
Notes
Next time I would use a professional printer for the images as the quality from my desktop printer was terrible.
Page One: I ended up using the blue eye from the 3D glasses instead of the red one as the quality of the ink produced a better effect for that one.
Page Two: Really pleased with the Venus Fly Trap! I glued down each hair individually using a nuvo glue pen I found in my box of adhesives.
Page Three: I coloured in some of the blank spaces on the pull tabs, and had to use brown paper shielding for the pull mechanism to stop it interfering with the structure of the cocoon. It worked really well, but of course I didn't take any photos!
The orchid didn't want to stay stuck together - I ended up using super glue gel (brand: Gorilla) and a paperclip to keep it together while it dried to make sure it was fully stuck. This was the most complicated page but I really like it and think it works really well.
Page Four: My favourite and least favourite page! The clock mechanism is amazing, and my favourite element. I reinforced my tape to make sure it stayed stuck using superglue and brown paper.
Unfortunately I used really thick black card for the shadow box as I decided to just do it in black card rather than print it as my printer was running out of ink. The card was far too thick and the whole book is affected by it as the thickness of the page is far too much. It has rather ruined the whole book. You can see this on the photo of the cross section of the book.
Page Five: As the printer was running out of ink, I had to use coloured pencils to improve the effect for the final page. I also had trouble making the shell of the firefly stick, so I ended up reinforcing it with brown paper and superglue.
Binding: I was probably really naughty, and used PVA glue to stick the hinge on and the brown paper cover. It worked really well, so I don't regret it, but I'm not sure how authentic it is!
The brown paper was recycled wrapping from the tube the bookcloth came in - quite sturdy brown paper, but not specialist book-making paper.
General: I wanted to write the English translation for the text, but I was so excited to finish the book that I didn't think about the fact that it would be difficult to do once I had stuck it all together - so I may still do this, but I probably won't as I'm excited to get on to my next project from a course by Silvia!
I really recommend this as a fun activity to do on a rainy weekend. If you are crafty you will have a lot of the materials at home already - the only thing I had to order was the bookcloth - and even if you aren't, it's not super expensive and doesn't really require much more than tape, a cutting mat and scalpel, and some card.
