Anke Van den Bremt

I was born in 1976 in Brussels, where I still live. As a child, I was constantly drawing, but after my university studies (Language and Literature: Germanic languages) I started to focus on my other passion: languages and literature. I teach Dutch to adults and translate poetry from German and Swedish to Dutch.

About ten years ago, I rediscovered the joy of drawing, which I have been focusing on more and more in recent years. After I started sharing my work on social media, I felt encouraged and now I get occasional commissions and sell postcards and calendars in various shops. I participated in several group exhibitions in my commune and won a competition to design a beer label.

I draw inspiration from nature (the passage of the seasons, colours and shapes of trees, leaves and flowers) and from patterns of fabrics and wallpapers (I also embroider myself). Scandinavian patterns and styles attract me a lot, but also old miniatures from India and Persia, for example. I like to combine decorative patterns and elements from nature with female characters. I work mainly with fineliners and coloured pencils, and sometimes also with ink and collage elements.
