P.J. Shotts

I’m a musician, performing live and in studio for over 20 years. I used to draw all the time and music kind of took over until almost 3 years ago I picked it back up and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it and how much better I was getting in a short amount of time. It actually started when I posted some art from 15/20 something years ago on my social media pages. After my Uncle a very gifted artist himself, my brother an art director of a now very prominent Halloween company and sculptor. In addition one of my best friends that works in the gaming industry and builds things digitally, each had messaged me stating pretty much the same thing, “You should pick up drawing again!”

So I decided to give it a go and just picking random things I liked that I wanted to draw. My uncle sent me some great reference books, Loomis being one of them and this really helped get a decent grasp on form and dialing in the basics. I’d say my strong point is definitely getting a likeness down with drawing the head and face. Working to get better at drawing the body and rounding out the abilities and striving to draw completely from my mind and recall the things I learn. Certainly I will still use reference material but it would be nice to get inside of it all and the understanding of it to draw what’s in your head. This is why I want to buy courses to hone these types of skills. Each thing you practice or learn is a set of tools to call on from both memory and repetition.

Started with pencil and paper.
Now into digital using Procreate and Affinity Designer. Learning watercolor digitally.
Goals are to get into real watercolor, pen and ink styles.
