Johanna Schmal

Hello, I am Johanna Schmal, a Berlin based creator working across fine and applied arts.
Originally trained in architecture and with 10 years of practice, I specialized in illustration for childrens publications some years ago and found my way back to an analogue and artistic way of creation. Since then I am working a lot with paper collage and more recently also with fabric, turning the collage work into a new media. My latest practice concentrates on quilted textile wall hangings, for which I create lots of the used colours by plant dying including nature, the process of transformation and a connection to the origin of the plants into the artwork.
