Let me explain you the materials and the process that I teach in order to follow a method that is very close to that of the Master himself.

I like to start with the main axes of the head, a central axis and the axis of the eye, then I draw an oval and find my facial features within this structure following the ideal proportions of Leonardo and also measuring from the model.
No grid, no transferring of a picture on my prepared support, just observation and finding the different planes using the main masses.
I block in all the areas that are in shadow using a light tonal value, in case I need to move things around because the process of observation is such that the model start to unveil slowly and time helps us to find the way.

I have prepared a quarter sheet of 100% cotton paper hot press 300gr as a support using a walnut ink but Leonardo would have used an oak gall ink prepared with galls , iron sulfate and Arabic gum.
The drawing tools that I decided to use for the portrait are all pencils: dry charcoal, an hard carbon, sanguine (red chalk) and white chalk, in addition I would have used a brush and the same ink to create some washes, but not this time.

Once the main masses are defined I use different tonal values to render the shape going from general to detail, I also add my red chalk and carbon in order to achieve darker tones and to render the skin, I work only on the areas that are in shadow and leave the lightest areas untouched until the end of this process and use the white chalk to create some highlights.

Finally, once the portrait has all the elements in place I render the features in detail and check for the overall aspect of the initial composition, adding hatches and lines to give strength to the final portrait.
