Over het eindproject van de cursus: Meubelontwerp: maak een houten lamp

Furniture Design: Make a Wooden Lamp

“We have reached the end of the course. I hope it has given you some food for thought. The idea behind this project is for you to know your design possibilities. At the end of the day, a designer is not a person that does beautiful renders, but rather someone who knows that an object has the potential to solve a necessity or fulfill a desire. I hope that with this course you will not only fabricate a lamp or any other object that works and that will transform your space but also have expanded your mindset to find possibilities in every object that surrounds you. I encourage you to take what you have learned not only to other objects that you would like to create but also to your personal and professional vision. Design is a possibility to redefine our relation to our environment, its elements, artifacts, and even other human beings. Considering all is a life philosophy I push myself to implement in everything I do, and I invite you to do the same. As you know, I expect you to produce a final project that encompasses all the steps you took to create the lamp or piece of furniture of your choice, always under the parameters and framework of resourcefulness. Use my project as a template of sorts, but make it your own. My suggestion is that you use the feedback you garner in the tasks of Units 4 and 5 to be the backbone of your project. The more you work on what I propose to you there, the finer the result will be. In that regard, let me summarize the benchmarks of my process. I first started by conceptualizing my artwork, what I wanted to create, and with what, always being material-conscious. As you could see throughout the process, I chose to build a lamp out of broomsticks. For that, I visited a broomstick factory nearby, where I sourced my sticks. How easy or convenient it is for you to go to the manufacturer will depend on what you go for in terms of materials. Making a lamp, I had to be very aware of the effect of light on a given space, and what source of light I would use. Go for whatever suits you best within the wide array of options in the market. Once I got all my planning made and my tools ready, I started by building the structure of the lamp. Cutting the pieces of the reflector to the measures I devised, I then assembled them.

I then focused on the base. I cut the broomsticks into seven different pieces of varying length. Again, have your measures ready and well-thought before assembling anything. Go module by module until you have all the main elements ready. At that point, you can put it all together. Then, I worked on adding the electrical components, those that will turn it into a full-fledged lamp. Getting the cable, the switch, and the socket ready is a rather simple task (make sure the switch does its work fine beforehand, though), but you have to be mindful of where you want o to attach the socket. For that, I used two screws (not all the way down, allow for 20 mm of slack), which I placed where the socket will rest. Use ties to secure it firmly. Ties are very useful to attach the cable to whatever section of the lamp you want it to run through.
At this stage, the lamp is ready and it is entirely up to you to pamper it. I chose to and used wood dye for that. Any sort of paint and method (brush, spray) works. As for the setup and placement, it is also up to your liking, choices, and intentions. If you want it to be on a wall, I recommend you use screw hooks.
I feel very honored you decided to take this course. I love sharing the ideas and techniques I have learned and developed throughout my career because I think they can make the world a better place. Design is not only my profession and passion, but it is also a tool to transform what we consider should be different. Never forget to have fun, to take the time to make the lamp once or twice or three times before you get it perfect. Be ingenious. Don’t hesitate to adapt the lamp to your needs and the resources available near you. Once you are ready to submit your project, click on "Create your project" and share it with the whole Domestika community. Again, I encourage you to participate in the discussion threads I created, where you can get to know like-minded creatives and garner valuable feedback. I will be participating in the discussions and be following your progress. Bear in mind that it might take some time for me to reply as I also have my professional practice. We keep in touch! ”

Het idee achter dit project is dat u uw ontwerpmogelijkheden kent.
