Botanical illustration is becoming more and more popular. It is a timeless blend of art and science, capturing the intricate beauty of plants with remarkable precision. Unlike photography, these illustrations highlight essential details right down to the last leaf or petal edge. Botanical art has also played a vital role in documenting plant species for both scientific study and aesthetic appreciation. In this post we want to share five free lessons that will help you learn or refine your skills in botanical illustration!
These lessons will be available for 15 days from September 19th to October 3rd, and you must be signed into your Domestika account to access them! If you don’t have an account, you can sign up for free today!
Free Lessons:
1. Artists Floral Watercolor: Connect with Nature - Exercise: Feathers
Inga Buividavice shows students how to have some fun and paint a very simple object pattern. You will practice applying the previously learned effects and challenge yourself to use a limited palette of only four colors. This lesson is one part of her larger course on Domestika, in which you can explore pigments and textures to create organic botanical compositions that capture the beauty of the natural world.
2. Botanical Sketchbooking: A Meditative Approach - Line Technique: The Geometry of Plants
Lapin teaches you how to sum up the geometry of several plants to understand their architecture. Highlighting that to draw a plant you need to understand it, and this understanding comes from observation and comparison with what you already know. To accurately draw one species, you need to highlight the specificity that makes this plant immediately identifiable, describing the geometry, shapes, and distribution of its leaves.
3. Botanical Watercolor Illustration: Cross-Hatching Technique - Botanical Watercolours: An Introduction to the Genre
Vincent Jeannerot, a talented watercolor painter, introduces students to the genre of aquarelle botanique in paint. He addresses how to master the art of botanical watercolor, learn cross-hatching technique, color selection, and water management for stunning artworks.
4. Realistic Botanical Illustration: Escape to Nature - Painting the Leaves and the Branch 1
Katerina Kolberg details the technique she uses to paint the leaves, which pigments she adds, and how she sculpts the shape rather than adding more layers to create volume gradually. Students will learn how to paint detailed botanical illustrations by exploring the versatility of watercolor and experiment with glazes, color values, and textures.
5. Botanical Watercolor: Illustrating Art and Science - Observational Drawing
Julia Trickey teaches students how to transform everyday subjects like fruit into realistic botanical portraits by combining observational drawing with contemporary watercolor techniques. You will be shown how to draw larger than life accurately, how to transfer the drawing onto watercolor paper, and how to create realistic drawing of our subject from life and from photographs.
With these five free lessons you will be able to understand and refine your skills in botanical illustration, and create something beautiful, realistic, and transformational. We hope you find a lesson that suits your needs on this list!
