Sally Jory – Bio
I have loved art since I was a child. Growing up I was very fortunate to have several artists around me who inspired and encouraged.
As an adult I completed some formal art education and gained an Advanced Diploma of Art and Creativity with the Learning Connexion, Wellington.
My main areas of interests are drawing and painting. My drawings are detailed and I like to use graphite pencil, coloured pencil and fine pen and ink. I usually paint with acrylics. My inspiration comes from what is happening in my own life.
What I like best is using my imagination and merging animals, people and everyday objects in unexpected ways. It is cool when my art sparks people’s memories from the past or makes them smile. Humour, colour and quirkiness is a feature of my light-hearted work.
It has been enjoyable painting several murals at Millers Flat. The School and Community Library was a collaboration with the children which was great fun. The School has local scenes and images depicted. The Library has the theme of “The Tree of Knowledge”. It has silhouettes of the tallest and smallest child in the school at that time. Down the road at the Motor Camp is a large mural featuring a camping retro vibe.
In the past I have taught art to children and adults. For a few years I was an art tutor for Otago Corrections. Presently I am assisting people who attend Able Minds in Alexandra with a large interior mural. I am amazed at what brilliant ideas they have come up with. They are learning new skills and have a real sense of pride in their creation. Art makes people happy
