Here is the full process of how I made and completed this marvellous circus cat from my course Imaginative Character Illustration with Watercolor

The sketch phase! Looking at photos, book image references and prompts to create my character.

Added the swatches of colour I wanted to use from an existing image (I love bright contrasting colours!)

Transfered the sketch design to watercolour paper using a dark pen on plain paper and using a lightbox

The first watercolour layers! Getting the first blocks of colour and introducing gradients to add texture.

Adding in shadows and patterns with watercolour in this stage (I love adding blue for shadows)

Pencil stage! I added in smaller details (such as eyes and whiskers) with coloured pencils.

Now I didn't need to edit my painting (it works as it is!) but sometimes when I share illustrations online I like to clean them up a little bit to make them translate on the screen better.

Scanned the painting into photoshop and edited it to make it a blit cleaner for sharing online

When I edited this image I wanted to make the colours pop so I adjusted the levels in photoshop to change the contrast. I also went in with the clone stamp tool to clean up any pieces of dust or undesirable watercolour marks that I feelt didn't work. Then I went over the edges of the character with a white brush to mimic the background to neaten them. Finally some of the colours were lost in the scanning process so I added semi transparent colours over some of the elements (like the hat) using a multiply layer to make them richer.
