Tarot

Voy a ser sincero, no soy un experto en el tarot. No sé tirar las cartas ni el significado de todos los arcanos. Lo que me interesa es el poder de la ilustración para contar historias, generar narrativas, evocar o contar. Los libros sin palabras me apasionan y me interesa mucho cómo el lector superpone sus emociones o sentimientos y genera un relato usando la ilustración como guía. También es una manifestación artística, son pinturas, dibujos o ilustraciones que han sobrevivido a lo largo de los años. Y también una tradición: el juego de cartas o naipes. Por todo ello me lancé a investigar.

El tarot refleja la necesidad del ser humano por enfrentarse a la incertidumbre, entender lo desconocido y entenderse a sí mismo y a aquellos que nos rodean. Buscamos nuestro reflejo en las cartas. Todos somos el loco, buscamos la fortuna o el amor, a veces necesitamos cambios o rupturas, somos justos o déspotas. Nos dejamos llevar por lo bueno y en ocasiones por lo malo. Es la naturaleza humana.

Creo que los dibujos nos sirven para visualizar esas partes de nosotros y analizarlas de forma externa, pero también de forma interna. Los arquetipos que aparecen en el tarot son modelos de comportamiento. El tarot son imágenes, dibujos, ilustraciones. Todo lo que se ve o se dibuja es más fácil de explicar, verbalizar o contar porque describimos situaciones o creamos una narrativa a partir de las imágenes.

El tarot contiene la naturaleza, los elementos naturales, sol, luna, estrella pero también las emociones primarias, amor, justicia, bajas pasiones y todo aquello que desea o teme el hombre: muerte, riqueza, trascender.

Se generan múltiples variables de lectura. Al no haber un texto establecemos relaciones de significado en función de una imagen y en función de la relación de las imágenes, como si se tratara una secuencia o una narrativa. Establecemos conexiones entre las formas, los colores y los conceptos. Y además establecemos significado como lectores o espectadores a través de nuestras propias vivencias, experiencias, ideas. Una misma carta no significa lo mismo para una persona que para otra. También el significado cambia en función del momento vital de la persona.

El tarot es mutable y elástico, miles de artistas o ilustradores han interpretado y transformado visualmente estos conceptos a lo largo del tiempo. Aquí te muestro mi proyecto de ilustrar tres arcanos del tarot: el loco, la templanza y la luna.

A lo largo del curso te explico cómo he ido ilustrando un arcano, cómo he generado ideas jugando con símbolos e iconografía ya sea a través de la escritura o dibujo automático. A continuación te muestro paso a paso cómo emplear la pintura acrílica para conseguir efectos o texturas increíbles que puedes aplicar a cualquier tipo de ilustración.

I'll be honest, I'm not an expert on tarot. I do not know to throw the cards nor the meaning of all the arcana. What interests me is the power of illustration to tell stories, generate narratives, evoke or tell. I am passionate about books without words and I am very interested in how the reader superimposes her emotions or feelings and generates a story using the illustration as a guide. It is also an artistic manifestation, they are paintings, drawings or illustrations that have survived over the years. And also a tradition: the game of cards. For all this I launched myself to investigate.

The tarot reflects the need of the human being to face uncertainty, understand the unknown and understand himself and those around him. We look for our reflection in the cards. We are all like the fool, we seek fortune or love, sometimes we need changes or breaks, we are just or despots. We let ourselves be carried away by the good and sometimes by the bad. It is human nature.

I think that the drawings help us to visualize those parts of ourselves and analyze them externally, but also internally. The archetypes that appear in the tarot are models of behavior. The tarot are images, drawings, illustrations. Everything that is seen or drawn is easier to explain, verbalize or tell because we describe situations or create a narrative from the images.

The tarot contains nature, the natural elements, sun, moon, star but also the primary emotions, love, justice, low passions and everything that man wants or fears: death, wealth, transcending.

Multiple read variables are generated. As there is no text, we establish relationships of meaning based on an image and based on the relationship of images, as if it were a sequence or a narrative. We establish connections between shapes, colors and concepts. And we also establish meaning as readers or viewers through our own experiences, experiences, ideas. The same card does not mean the same for one person as for another. Also the meaning changes depending on the vital moment of the person.

The tarot is mutable and elastic, thousands of artists or illustrators have visually interpreted and transformed these concepts over time. Here I show you my project to illustrate three arcana of the tarot: the fool, temperance and the moon.

Throughout the course I will explain to you how I have been illustrating an arcane, how I have generated ideas by playing with symbols and iconography either through writing or automatic drawing. Below I show you step by step how to use acrylic paint to achieve incredible effects or textures that you can apply to any type of illustration.
