Jules Smith

I rise each day curious to discover what longs to be made through me. Courageously seeking to uncover the buried treasure within, I paint what I experience; landscapes and seascapes and most inspired by patterns of light and shadow. I’m driven to create Portraits that tell the stories of the people and times we are living through, studying texture and form, beauty, humility, and injustice.

“The artist’s job is to be a witness to his time in history,” says artist Robert Rauschenberg and Jules claims that challenge. “Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while working." said artist Henri Matisse. Which is another inspirational idea about creativity that Jules lives by.

Raised in Santa Paula, California, she currently splits her time between her home on the island of Puerto Rico and her hometown in California.

Van Gogh, Edgar Payne, Douglas Shively, Mary Cassatt and all the impressionists influence her. Jules first studied art at Ventura College under Richard Phelps, Carlisle Cooper, Richard Peterson and others, and more recently at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design. Oil, pastels and gouache are her preferred mediums after starting in acrylics more than 34 years ago.

Jules is a member of the California Art Club and the Pastel Society of Southern California and her Art has been included in their exhibitions, several Santa Paula Art Museum Exhibitions, a solo art show and her Art Vlog YouTube channel “Jules Smith Paints” launched this year. And more recently an Art Card and Print online Shop.

I currently have a 20" x 30" Landscape of "South Mountain West with Avocado and Citrus Groves" in the 14th Art About Agriculture at the Santa Paula Art Museum through March 2023. I was honored to join 60 other local California Artists in the vibrant annual group show that promotes awareness of agriculture by exploring its many facets through art - from workers to water, machinery to fields, to the food that goes on our plates.
