Sydney collects waste both recyclable and non-recyclable from thousands of homes and apartments. The collection days vary depending on the place of residence. The units and houses are provided with general litter bins and recycling bins. For businesses, they are required to make their arrangements to have the waste collected as the services are only available for the city’s residents.
Recyclable materials include steel, plastic, aluminum and glass containers. After rubbish removal Sydney, the items are sorted out and separated before being reprocessed. The recycled elements can be used to make other things such as aluminum used to make boat and bicycles. On the other hand, plastics can be used to make winter fleeces. Soft plastic bags like bread wraps, confectioner and biscuit packets can also be made into functional furniture. Recycling helps reduce pollution of the environment by the non-degradable materials.
Chemical wastes should be properly disposed of in a safe place. The best option is to take them to a Chemical Cleanout event in the city under the NSW Environmental Protection Authority. A chemical that can be accepted include aerosols, paints, pool chemicals, pesticides among others. However, it is only household quantities that are recognized and not at commercial level. Most of the collected compounds are then recycled but those with toxins like mercury, lead and cadmium are disposed of in safe places as they are hazardous.
Electronic waste should not be placed in the waste bins as other household wastes. Between October 2016 and June 2017 about 116 tons of e-waste was recycled in Sydney. This greatly helped keep them out of landfills. An event was held recently to encourage people to deposit e-wastes, and they brought along home appliances that they wanted to dispose of. The e-waste collected is then recycled. They have metals such as platinum and copper that can be reused. Furthermore, televisions and computers contain toxins like mercury and lead which can percolate from the landfills into water bodies.
Other materials that should not be dumped in bins include mobile phones, batteries, and bulbs. This is because they have useful metals in them and also contain toxins that can contaminate water. The residents are therefore encouraged to dispose of such wastes with the right people to reduce its effects on people’s health. Small old batteries can be recycled to new ones. Metals like silver, copper, and gold can be removed from old phones and put to good use. Light bulbs can be reused to make glass wool insulator and mercury.
Organic green wastes are often recycled into compost, mulch and soil conditioners. A bin for such waste is provided. The residue is mostly made up of leaves, flowers, grass and small branches. The mixture should have no soil present in it, and the branches should not be more than a meter long. The peak amount that can be collected is only a cubic meter. People can however recycle such at their homes by composting them to form mulch.
The city council of Sydney has put in place measures to ensure its city and streets are kept clean at all times. They have proved to be passionate about the environment by trying to recycle most wastes from the residents.
