The graduation project’s chosen theme is the conversion of an old building, which was originally a slaughterhouse, into a Gastronomic Complex comprising a Gourmet Market, a Gastronomy School and a restaurant. The existing construction was built in 1935 in Cais Mauá, the former harbor of Porto Alegre, capital city of Rio Grande do Sul. After a strong flood that broke into the city in 1941, a 3 meters high wall was built separating the wharf from the city and contributing to its progressive decline. It remained deactivated and practically abandoned since the 70’s until recently, when revitalization projects started to show. The proposed theme aims to preserve the activity heritage focused on the food industry, turning a building that used to store food into a Gourmet Market. The project pursuits to preserve the art deco characteristics, and the symmetry that composes the original façade as well as its “refrigerator chamber” character, with very few openings. The internal structure, on the other hand, was redesigned. It was made with steel and precast elements, composing a new internal volume, with open and integrated internal spaces naturally illuminated through translucent roofing. Attached to the market, a new building was proposed to complement and support its existing syllabus. On this new building, a Gastronomy School and a restaurant take place. The main goals were to make this annex discrete regarding the historical building, and that it would not block the view to Guaiba Lake, providing different views of the city through its rooftop. Together, these elements compose a complex that intents to revitalize a very important area to the city and to offer an incentive to its citizen’s culture.
