Stepping Back into the Water

The following images were used in a graphic memoir I created for a 2021 graduate education course I was taking. I had not used ink brushes before, as decades ago I had used sable brushes, quills and rapidograph pens. I had not drawn consistently in 25 years, and I only allowed my self one hour to plan and implement each image for this project. As this course was during COVID lockdowns and remote learning, I experimented with the Statue of Liberty nursing Uncle Sam, dressed in her PPE and mask, holding fluids instead of her torch. I also lost a ten-year old student to gun violence, and was not able to attend her funeral. I created the balloon image as my memorial to her.
