I used to draw in Illustrator a lot but I gave up a few years ago to focus more on pen and ink. Daniele's course gave me the inspiration to try that Pen tool and blending function all over again. His Domestika course made me realise just how much more work I needed to put in to the piece in order to make it look more professional.
This course is really good if you're new to Illustrator because Daniele goes over some of the basic functions and explains how to use them. I was keen to follow his workflow, from thumbnail sketch to more refined sketches and then onto digital art. I was amazed just how much time he spent refining his pencil sketches. I cheated and made my prelim drawings in Procreate, but I made sure to really nail that final sketch so it had as much detail as possible. this meant the digital inking wouldn't leave so much room for guess work.
For the digital creation part, I learned a lot of useful tips, keyboard shortcuts. I already finished my piece before I got to the part where he shows off some advanced blending tips - but I will definitely make sure to utilise them in future artworks. Newcomers to Domestika need to be prepared for a lot of video content where you are essentially just watching the artist click and point (it is speeded up however) as they add one tiny stroke after another. But I liked seeing this, it's the only way to really get an insight into how another artist works.
Overall I'm really glad I bought this course. This style of art really suits me and Daniele's lessons have definitely helped me improve much further than where I was before.

Final results looks awesome and I would definitely say it's an improvement on your other work I saw on instagram! You haven't over done it on the main linework which is good, one of my bad habits it's always going in too strong and not considering enough how it effects the colour stages. You've nailed the way the ape looks and the shading/lighting is really good especially on the ears as you've given the space for the colours to show.
Fantastic overall :D
@danielecaruso thanks! appreciate the feedback.
@meerkatsu you are not alone... I bought @danielecaruso course and when he started sketching on paper with a pencil and the lightbox; I looked for pencil and paper, even notebooks but couldn't find any so... I went to my go-to iPad pro and went for my ProCreate, lol!
I found your explanation like I was reading something I wrote. I already have my different workflows for different software and my own style. I being working on Affinity Designer on the iPad for a while but I kept finding all these arts in IG that I liked and come to find out it was @danielecaruso and others like him so this course was obvious for me to buy.
So back again in Illustrator after a long time. Watching the techniques employed in the lessons got me excited about picking AI again. I was actually not caring much for it because I am finding Designer so much fun and logical. Right now AI has the hatching which AD doesn't have but when they get it I don't know about going back to AI.
Another thing I realize about the course is the amount of time Daniele spends adding detail lil by lil, when I am the contrary. I am always looking for the tool that lets me get my inking the fastest and more natural... so the PEN tool still a debate for me versus the BLOB BRUSH.
ART CRITIQUE: Anyways in regards to your art it looks very professional and awesome; however, the one thing that sticks out is the knife. Because you put so much love and detail into the ape, the knife looks like the art is unfinished. In fact, your art would look better if you take the knife off and just leave the ape. Otherwise, you would need to match the love you gave to the ape and give it also to the knife. My eyes fall on the knife's handle right away because there is so much solid space unlike the precise details and hatching you employed on the hair, the eyes, the ears, and the upper lip of the ape.
So the ape is awesome and I like how you got your color scheme on the side (I do the same). Now that halftone inside the eye scar... bravo! That was well thought out. I am haven't use halftone because I am just getting to it so when I saw you used it I was like slow clap. I also like the shading outside the eyes and that you use the mirror technique... work smart not hard.
Great design, now put it in Amazon Merc, Printful, Etsy, and RedBubble and make bricks of money!
Me encanta... está muy chulo y muy bien desarrolado... mucho trabajo. felicidades
@pochonieves thanks for your critique. I looked at it hard and re-evaluated the composition. Heh, I really like the knife so I guess it is a difference of subjective opinion, but of course, it would be not a big amount of work to draw a non-knife version. I shall consider it. Thanks!
