Want to capture history in the making with your camera? Learn to photograph current affairs as they unfold alongside Manu Brabo, freelance photojournalist and winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for his photos from the Syrian civil war. Since 2007, he has documented uprisings, rebellions, and civil wars from the front lines in countries such as Haiti, Honduras, Kosovo, Palestine, Libya, Syria, and Ukraine.
In this online course, explore the ins and outs of photojournalism, from its origins and sociocultural context to ethical factors and practical tips. Manu shows you the equipment he works with and guides you through the process of a developing photoreport.

This is an intermediate-level course, perfect for those with basic photography skills who want to specialize in conflict photojournalism and visual reporting.
It’s recommended to have a DSLR or mirrorless camera, prime or zoom lenses, chargers, batteries, a card reader, and an external hard drive for backups. Access to digital editing software is also helpful.
You’ll learn long exposure techniques, narrative composition, quick editing, gear selection, file management, and strategies for documenting armed conflicts and high-intensity situations.
The course explores war representation from ancient pictorial art (engravings, columns) to 19th and 20th-century war photography, analyzing the ethical and technical evolution of photojournalism.
Ethical principles are taught to ensure respect and empathy when photographing victims, emphasizing truthfulness and consent while avoiding sensationalism in war documentation.
You’ll learn how to select and edit images using programs like Lightroom and Photo Mechanic, and techniques for building strong, objective visual narratives in photo reports.
