The Ice Breakup was an adventure for me! It started out looking COMPLETELY different from when it started and transitioned into a beautiful and dynamic piece that feels alive to me.
I worked it with my favorite clove hitch knot and moved the dyed strings across the piece by feel with no initial plan or specific design once I changed my original design. I was going for a meandering river feel, to capture a bit of my time in Alaska for graduate school.
To read more about the actual inspiration for it I've written a nice blog post that discusses the seasonal changes from winter to spring in Alaska and a favorite pastime of voting on the date of the ice breaking up along the rivers!
The colors come from my way of dyeing my cotton string to create these transitional color gradients that are meant to keep your eye travelling along the piece. That paired with the meandering strings really makes this river dance!
If you're interested in dyeing your own materials, or learning these knotting techniques, my course will guide you through both of those processes!
