Colombian ancient tribes, such as the Muiscas and Quimbayas, were excellent goldsmiths, and they believed that this precious metal was a piece of the sun on earth. For centuries, different tribes collected and worked gold in order to create intricate and delicate pieces by dominating different techniques.
After studying and researching the art of the rightful owners of this land, I started finding visual similarities between gold crafts and textiles of these cultures and modern technology. They are both made by intricate straight lines that create beautiful geometric patterns. This collection of wall hangings and interior fabrics reflects the beauty and delicacy found in pre columbian gold crafts. The graphic style of this ancient art is compared with the modern esthetics of microchips and circuitboards. Thus, creating a visual parallel of the ancient and the contemporary world.
The main pieces are three wall hangings that represent the three worlds in which pre columbian cultures believed in: the sky, the middle earth and the underworld. The first one are the skies. It is printed on a hand dyed cotton velvet. The circle is made from jute strands and gold foil. The second piece represents the middle earth which acts as a stairway between the skies and the underworld. It is made from laser cut vinyl and foil. The last one, the underworld, is made from dyed suede, silk organza stripes and gold foil. All the three pieces measure 58cm x 58cm and are mounted over wooden boards.
