I had a lot of fun making these colored pencil illustrations! This article from The New Yorker was special to me because, as an amateur flutist, I agree with the fact that this fine instrument needs more repertoire, and its versatility acknowledged.
This is the main illustration of the series, inspired by cave paintings.
While flutes are nowadays silver, I decided to paint these yellow because this color is closer to bones or wood, the materials flutes were made of in earlier times.
I also chose to draw the flutes with various colours, to reinforce the instrument's versatility. The one with a face is based in actual flutes by the Caral culture, the oldest pre-Hispanic civilization, well-known for building these instruments.
"She made heavy use of her contrabass flute, which she has nicknamed Big Bertha; more than six feet tall, it emits tones of unearthly, breathy depth, suitable for an audience of whales".
"Short in duration, cosmic in scope, "Density 21.5" transforms the flute into a luminous vessel of abstraction".
