“When our editorial teams are immediately and unanimously passionate about a piece, we pay attention. Not only as lit lovers, but as editors who find in stories something to learn about our very own magazine. ‘Spring Awakening’ found that instant, unanimous admiration. While we often feature stories that challenge narrative conventions, we too feature stories that challenge our socialized predilections, such as ‘Spring Awakening’.
Lehn’s main figure is what our overbearing mothers might call ‘a mess,’ in her exposure of the very messes we obscure, either out of politeness or shame. However cliché to say, we live peculiar digital times with online avatars pretending to be otherwise perfect. In ‘Spring Awakening’, we find a reminder of our own hypocrisies in an adult woman struggling, well, to adult. We are privy to her conversations with her therapist, he forgetfulness, her cat, her yoga, her struggle. 'Spring Awakening' is in many ways a meditation on the solitary disability of mental health, and Lehn has created a story that is anywhere and nowhere, but is just now and personal. For us, this story represents who we are/want to be, editorially speaking. It is refreshing to publish a piece that is unapologetic and #nofilter.” (STILL Magazine, New York, 24.11.2018)
“Spring Awakening” was awarded the “Highly Commended” honor in Best Original Fiction at the 2018 Stack Awards.
