It all starts in my notebook. I like to keep a detailed record of each project: I write down every idea, every step forward, every step backwards… This also helps me to visualise the project, the work, as a whole.

I was very clear that I wanted part of the script to have a bit of art history (I did a general investigation into Goya’s artistic career and a more detailed one into the main work that appears in the comic), and the other a bit of Bécquer. Yes, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. Who better than him to be inspired by when writing the script?

Bécquer and Goya? The combination sounded great to me; when I reread ‘Ojos Verdes’, I couldn’t help but think of the lady with a lost profile in the portrait of ‘La Familia de Carlos IV’. Hence the main idea that the comic is about.

From the beginning I knew I wanted to do the illustrations with graphite. HB, 2B and 5B were the weights chosen and the paper used for this project is a 200g Canson with a light grain.

I did the final edition of the comic with digital programs. After scanning the pages, I cleaned them of dirt and impurities, added contrasts, ink and paper textures, and finally added the script text.

Page 1.
“During the spring of 1800, I completed my work as a court painter for King Charles IV after portraying his family.”
- Mr. Franciscooo…
“I let the light gradually reveal the different protagonists of the painting…”
Page 2.
“From my dark presence…”
“…to the whitish and ghostly luminosity of the lady with a lost profile.”
- Who are you?
- What is your homeland?
- Where do you live?
“I want to solve the mystery that surrounds that creature before it fades away like a midnight dream that cannot be remembered in the morning.”
“But it hides among the caprichos that inhabit that other world that I carry inside my head…”
“…where the ghosts of my imagination parade before my eyes in procession, naked and deformed…”
“…asking me to bring them to light and free them from the darkness in which they live.”
