Introduction
Butterflies Are Self Propelled Flowers - a Slow Stitched Scroll

Supplies
a long piece of plain fabric - mine is about 4" x 18"
some fabric scraps
embroidery threads and/or sewing threads
scissors
sewing needles

The idea behind this scroll
This piece illustrates the saying “Butterflies are self propelled flowers,” exploring the close relationship between movement and growth in nature. The scroll format allows the words and imagery to unfold slowly, echoing the gentle flight of butterflies across the cloth.

Laying out the foundation
I began by selecting and laying out small pieces of cloth, focusing on colour, rhythm, and softness. This initial arrangement became the body of the scroll, which I held in place with long, temporary stitches.

Adding imagery and words
The butterflies and hand-stitched text were added once the structure was established, so they felt embedded rather than placed on top.
I like to use a fine pencil to write my words, which I then stitch over with a tiny back stitch, using two strands of embroidery thread.

Filling the gaps
Next I added Suffolk Puffs (yo-yo's), some pretty little buttons and some simple decorative stitching to fill the gaps and balance the story.

Finishing off the scroll
Once all the stitching was complete I added another long strip of fabric to the back and stitched it around the edges, at the same time I added a piece of ribbon to one end - to give me something to tie around the scroll when it was rolled up.

They make great gifts too
This is a second version of the Butterfly Scroll - I made this one specially for a dear friend, see how I added a secret message under the butterfly wings.

Love this scroll, it is beautiful and the message is special. I see no instructions on how to make the butterfly or mention of them either. Where would I find instructions on your butterfly?
