Introduction
Hi all, I created this penguin piece called “A Safe Place” using just 4 colours. Importantly, leave detail until the end. Get the big shapes in first to ensure flow and transparency.

Supplies
I used 638gsm watercolour paper Saunders Waterford by St. Cuthberts Mill and just 4 colours:
Winsor and newton
Quinacridone magenta
Winsor lemon
Winsor blue green shade
Ivory black
Step one adding the largest, lightest and wettest shapes in first
Step one is lightest, purist colours, biggest shapes and softest edges. No detail at this stage. It’s about allowing the colours to flow into each other.

Step Two: Add darker tones, still soft edges.
Step Two are slightly darker shapes, some desaturated colours, still soft edges. The colours still need to be seen, created and allowed to flow. You can either paint wet into dry or wet into wet, which ever suits your style .

Step Three: Add darkest and smallest shapes and hardest edges.
Stage three is about applying the darkest colours and smallest shapes and hardest edges. This is applied wet paint onto dry paper.
